You may need to "test fit" a few times, to get to good depth/thread engagement but at least you won't go too deep, by doing a little at a time. If I can only turn the new fitting in about 1.5 turns (by hand ) then I know I still need to tap a little deeper, yet, because that isn't going to be enough "thread engagement" even once it get tightened. Once I get about 1/2 or 60% of the tap itself, into the metal, then I start checking the "fit" of the fitting or plug I want to put into that NPT hole. ![]() (new fitting runs out of threads, and is still slightly loose ) You might end up with a fitting or plug that can never get tight, because you went too deep. Just a little warning, if you aren't familiar with tapping a pipe thread hole = Don't run the pipe tap ALL the way down = the tap is tapered, so the deeper it goes, it gets wider. Oil will creep through the threads eventually if the threads aren't perfectly tight. You will be happier with the right sized hole and not one slightly bigger even if the oil isn't under pressure. My Father In Law has a manual mill and lathe and he just made an excel spread sheet for common sizes (1/4", 1/2", etc ). I don't have one on the back of ours because our CNC programming software takes care of that for us now : ) The better the software gets, the lazier I get. If you have time you can look for a "feeds/speeds" chart to put on the back as well for a quick RPM reference. Wouldn't Bobby Bare have loved that version?Īnyway, here's the 09:48 (#5218454 - in reply to #5218064) Subject: RE: Drill bit for 1/2" NPT Or how about that great folk song (from the mountains of N Georgia (USA Georgia! ) )."I'm 804.672 kilometers ("clicks if you were in the Army ) from home.". How about that famous Beach Boys song."She's real fine.my 6.70228 litre (liter ).My 6.70228 litre.!" Wasn't that a great song? Hopefully someday we'll get all this metric stuff behind us & it will all seem like a bad dream. I googled a bit & found this pdf showing both the Imperial decimal equivalants, but also the metric equivalent for us slackers in the USA. That will go on the back side of my drill bit vs tap size chart. Good idea on the decimal equivalants chart. Ron.NE ILL.10/48 - you for the chart! I'll be laminating a couple for the shop now too. You don't happen to have any other useful shop chart you use in the shop that I can print on the back side of this drill bit chart, do you? I like the 8.5x11 size personally though : ) To answer the question 23/32 is the correct size as pointed out earlier. You can also get the 3x5 laminated card right from starrett if you ask. I have a couple I have printed off and laminated. I couldn't find a clear answer 20:04 (#5217462 - in reply to #5217273) Subject: RE: Drill bit for 1/2" NPT I googled '1/2" npt drill size' and this was the second hit. ![]() Would a 3/4" drill bit work for a 1/2" NPT tap? It is just for the hydraulic case drain on a tractor so there won't be much pressure. ![]()
